Lying some 72 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu the Helambu region is situated at the head of the Melamchi Khola (River). The population is predominantly Holmo and Tamang, however, the lower part has a mixture of Brahmin and Chhetris. There are several picturesque villages and Buddhist monasteries scattered around the Melamchi Khola. The region’s proximity makes it the nearest Buddhist community of Kathmandu.
