About this Climb

Island Peak, officially known as Imja Tse, is one of the most popular and frequently climbed trekking peaks in Nepal. The mountain was first named Island Peak in 1951, as it appears like a solitary island rising from a vast sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. Although it was later renamed Imja Tse in 1983, the original name Island Peak remains widely used and recognized among climbers around the world.

The peak forms part of the south ridge of Lhotse Shar and provides an excellent introduction to Himalayan alpine climbing. From the summit ridge, climbers are rewarded with outstanding 360-degree panoramic views that include Makalu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Mera Peak, as well as the dramatic southern faces of Nuptse and Lhotse. The climb combines classic glacier travel, snow slopes, and a thrilling final ridge, making it both rewarding and memorable.
